About Us

HABITATION - An International Journal for Human Support Research is designed to meet the needs of an emerging field of study aimed at addressing the challenges of supporting human activities within controlled environments.

As humankind stretches the limits of understanding the environments of space, under the sea, and other harsh Earth environments, new lessons are learned that may affect our daily lives. Small spacecraft and submarines have used physical and chemical measures to recycle clean air and fresh water, and the principles of these small, unforgiving systems are applicable to understanding life support on Earth. As bioregenerative measures, such as plants and microbes, are added, the life support systems become larger and more complex. Basic concepts encountered in the study of such systems, for instance, the cycling of elements and the importance of biodiversity, have potential implications for issues important to humankind on Earth, such as global warming, the protection of endangered species, and clean water requirements.

HABITATION provides a peer-reviewed forum for sharing of these concepts among diverse groups. The Journal addresses the needs of collaborating scientists who are interested in the development of advanced habitation systems for humans living in isolated and extreme environments.

Focus areas include, but are not limited to Human Life Support, Monitoring & Control, Extra-vehicular Activity, Human Factors Engineering & Ergonomics, and Behavioral Health & Performance.
